Why get a Pre-NCT check done on my car?
Before a car is tested by the National Car Testing (NCT) service, it is advisable to have it serviced or checked over beforehand by a qualified mechanic. The inconvenience of having a car fail the NCT far outweighs the effort of having a car properly serviced and checked over prior to having it tested.
What is checked during a pre-NCT check?
A pre-NCT check includes checking the following items and more:
- Lights for correct operation, damage and water ingress
- Bulbs are working and correct colour
- Headlamp alignment and self leveling adjustor operation
- Suspension for visual defects such as worn bushes and linkages
- Brake pads and discs checked for correct minimum thickness
- Brake calipers checked for correct fitment and moving correctly
- Brake fluid checked for correct level and water content
- Coolant checked for level and concentration
- Engine oil checked for quantity
- Windscreen washer operation checked and topped up
- Wipers checked for correct operation and fitment
- Exhaust checked for leaks and fitment
- On Board Computer checked for faults codes
- Timing belt checked against time and distance recommended by manufacturer
